And now the end is near…
We are at the stage where we are winding things up and looking back on all that we have achieved this year. But before we tidy the classrooms and close the doors here’s a look back at June and what a month it was!
Junior Enterprise Programme
Ms. Delaney and Ms. Phelan’s 5th classes donated a third of their business profits to the Dawn Walk at Teach Dara where it will be used for local counselling services. They received congratulatory messages from An Taoiseach, Simon Harris and Irish rugby player, Bundee Aki. They then treated themselves to a pizza party with some of the profits. Well done to all the children and their teachers.
Fire Safety Talk
Ms. Tynan’s class were visited by members of the Fire Brigade to inform them of all precautions needed to stay safe this summer.
Sports Day
Our sports days were enjoyed by all even after the Senior sports day being postponed thanks to the erratic weather! Thank you to all who came along to enjoy the day and well done to the parents, uncles, aunts and grandparents etc who took part in the guardian races at the end of each day. It’s a day where we get to honour participation and fun alongside the more competitive running races.
Better Basics Writers in Residence
Some of the 3rd and 4th class engaged in a writers in Residence programme in association with the local library and community volunteers this term. They worked with Ella Jane Leeson for 12 weeks. She mentored them through writing workshops where they learned the techniques of writing stories. They finished by writing their own stories which are now published in a book! They finished the programme with a ceremony in Newbridge last week. Well done to the published authors!
School Tours
We had a few class groups that went on their school tour this month. Fun was had by all and I’m sure they all had a great night’s sleep afterwards!
The Science Guy
Ms. Nugent’s class had a visit from RTE’s Mark the Science Guy this month. Click here for a quick video.
Student Council
This year to link in with the local and European elections Ms. Quinn organised the election of next year’s Student council a little earlier than usual. The candidates produced posters and canvased for votes. The senior classes then very officially voted for their favourite candidate. Congratulations to our incoming Captain, Emily who will be ably assisted by Vice Captain, Saoirse.
Peer Tutoring
A few classes of the senior classes came to visit the junior classes this month to share their wisdom and talents.
Bottle Cap Art
The Academy yard is now host to a mural of St. Brigid which the children are in the process of decorating with bottle caps. Further bottle cap art will soon be in place in our school garden as well. Thanks to the Parent’s association who were eager to help out as always.
Awards Night
Each year Ms. Scannell organises a tremendous evening of celebration of all the talents in our school from sporting prowess, to team skills and participation in school clubs and organisations. Pictured below are our overall winners from 6th class this year.
Attendance
Congratulations to all the children who attended school every day this year!
End of Year Mass & Music Day
On Tuesday 25th we celebrated our end of year mass down in the field. Fr Adrian was undeterred by the sprinkling of rain and made it a special occasion for all pupils, teachers and family members who joined us. Unfortunately we were unable to hold our whole school concert but this only gave the opportunity to a few classes to hold little impromptu concerts whenever the sun made an appearance throughout the day.
